The Name
Altum /al-toom/ From the Latin altus, meaning height and depth.
Our work occupies both: the height of the surface rising toward you, and the depth of shadow falling away. Not flat. Not free. The space between, where art becomes architecture.
Our Story
Altum Gallery is a Melbourne-based studio specialising in large-scale handcrafted relief art. We work with collectors, architects, and interior designers who understand that walls should do more than hold paint.
Relief art is our sole focus. This concentration allows us to explore the full possibilities of depth, from subtle bas-relief that whispers to dramatic high-relief that declares.
The work ranges across styles: figurative portraiture that captures presence through dimensional form and abstract compositions where colour and depth create rhythm and tension What unifies them is the medium iteself. Relief is not a technique we apply to art. It is the art.
Why Relief Matters
As you move, as the day progresses, as seasons shift the quality of sunlight through your windows, the work changes. It rewards attention. It refuses to be static.
For collectors, this means acquiring something that continues to reveal itself. For spaces, this means art that activates architecture rather than merely decorating it.
The People Behind Altum
Kalani - the hands, the vision, the name. Every piece that leaves this studio has been assembled by Kalani. Thousands of blocks, placed one at a time. The patience, the precision, the final work that carries her name. This is what she brings to every piece.
Behind her stand the two people who made Altum possible: her husband Sunny whose artistic eye and engineering mind conceived the idea; and her father Nihal, whose year-long R&D journey engineered the process that makes each piece repeatable without losing its soul.
Together, they build something that brings lasting sophisticated presence to your space.
